News from afpop - Friday 23rd of September 2022

Included in this briefing: 1. Situation of Alert extended 2. Travel 3. DGS recommends use of mask 4. BLiP 2022 5. Satellite offices

Good afternoon and this week, for the first time in a while, we have news of a slight change to COVID recommendations. I think it is fair to say that the recent decision to remove the requirement for masks on transport and in pharmacies was not universally agreed amongst the DGS and government and it seems that some caution has returned in that regard, possibly because of the approaching flu season, but more on that in the Briefing below.
There are also some mixed reports coming through from UK Members about their experiences in Loulé and Quarteira, with some ‘teething troubles’ experienced in the first days of operation. It seems from reports that we are now receiving though that the glitches have been fixed and the process is running smoothly. Fingers crossed that gremlins have been successfully ousted. What we still don’t know is what is to happen for those residents outside the Loulé, Quarteira and Cascais areas, but as soon as we do have some news we will of course contact the UK Members directly to let them know.
I wish you all a pleasant weekend.
Situation of Alert extended
The Situation of Alert throughout mainland Portugal will remain in force until 23h59 on the 30th of September 2022.

You will find more about the measures in Madeira here:  (You can use the translator of your browser)
Measures for Açores can be found here: (you will find a translate button on the left of the page)
The existing Portuguese Travel Law was revoked from the 1st of July 2022. This means that anyone travelling to Portugal now no longer needs to present a negative COVID test, an EU Digital COVID Certificate or a vaccination or recovery certificate.
DGS recommends use of mask
Whilst the obligation to wear masks in closed environments hasn’t been reintroduced, the DGS (health authority) has issued a strong recommendation to wear masks whenever you are in closed environments, in groups and when using the collective passenger transports, including air transport, as well as when travelling by taxi or TVDE. Wearing a mask is also recommended on rail platforms and in covered accesses to public transport, including airports, ferry terminals and metro/train stations.
Furthermore and following concerns that we reported in the last Briefing from pharmacies, the DGS also recommends wearing a mask in those premises and also advises the most vulnerable people, namely those with chronic diseases with an increased risk for severe COVID, to wear a mask whenever they are in a situation of increased risk of exposure.
We remind you that the use of masks remains mandatory in all health facilities and nursing homes, or if you have been in contact with confirmed cases of COVID for 14 days after the date of last exposure.
BLiP 2022
A reminder that the Better Living in Portugal (BLiP) Expo will be held on the weekend of 8th and 9th of October in the Arena at Portimão. There will be more information in the October edition of UPDATE magazine, but please do mark the date in your diary and visit the arena at some point over the weekend. The exhibitors list and floor plan are also available on the BLiP website.
For new Members who may not know anything about BLiP, you can see more information on the BLiP website This year we have continued to expand on the idea of ‘Better Living’ and how that translates to ‘Making Life Better’ and we are delighted that there will be 20 organisations in the extended Community Area, all of whom dedicate their time and efforts to making life better for those who are in need.
